Types of bedding
Build your child's bedding from the ground up. Sheet sets offer excellent value with fitted and flat sheets and two cushion shams, in soft, easy-to-care-for cotton. Find them in great colours, patterns and polka dots. Add a pink, purple or blue quilt in the spring and summer, or a duvet cover with a duvet filler inside to keep your child warm and toasty in the wintertime. Be sure their mattress pads are soft and fitted just right. Whether their bedroom decor is traditional or modern, colourful or muted, sports-crazy or jungle-animal, you'll find kid's bedding to mix-and-match with their designs.
Some people prefer to buy bedding made from organic fibres, grown without chemicals and conserving natural resources to protect the environment. Many organic fabrics are produced in Fair Trade facilities, protecting workers involved in the process (see GOTS, below).
Comfort is key
You can't beat cotton for super softness and organic cotton gets high marks for feeling great against your skin. Some cotton is 'garment-washed' for even more softness. You want your child’s sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases to get softer each time you wash them, so they're nicely worn in, still strong and feel cozy and wonderful each time they crawl into bed.
Go GOTS
If sustainability is important to you, choose bedding certified by GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standards. GOTS guarantees not just the end material, but the entire textile process from fibre to finished product. With GOTS, all material is made without insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, biodegradable dyes, harsh chemicals or intensive irrigation. The cotton seeds are not genetically modified and fair labor practices have been followed for all workers involved in each stage of the process.
Get with the kid decor
Choose bedding for your child in colour schemes that will excite and delight them. You can find sheets in solid colours from pink blush to deep blue, to stripes of many colours, polka dots, chevrons and soft, shimmery sateen. Quilts add another texture and colour and switching duvet covers now and then is an affordable and excellent way to change up the design. Plus, don't forget cushions and shams. Be creative and find a pillowcase with your child's favourite movie character, hero, flower or food!
If the bedroom has a theme like sports, princesses or the zoo, you might prefer to anchor the bedding design in something colourful but simple, so as to bring out the excitement all around the bed, in cushions, posters, stuffed animals and toys.
Bedskirts and dust ruffles are another fun extra accessory you can use to add spice and pizzazz to your child's bedroom decor.
Choose the right size
Taking accurate bed measurements will ensure you get the right size sheets, quilt or duvet cover. Single and Double/Queen are the most popular kids' bedding sizes.
Make sure it's easy to clean
Yes, you want your kid's bedding to be durable, but certainly you want it easy to clean! Be sure to check the manufacturer's instructions to ensure the bedding is machine-washable and can be tumble-dried.
Choosing the right bedding for your kids is easy to do, given the wide variety of colours, patterns and materials available to you. Be sure the bedding is soft, safe, good for the planet and works well with the bedroom furnishings. If you follow these easy tips, both you and your child will be happy campers and sleep well.
